The Desktop Metal P-50 Production System™ is designed to be the fastest way to 3D print metal parts at-scale, producing parts competitive with conventional mass production techniques in volume and cost.
Desktop Metal first entered the 3D printing market with small-scale, benchtop machines. But with their flagship P-50 printer, they needed to deliver the same high quality of fit and finish on a product roughly the size of a pickup truck, while simultaneously addressing a host of manufacturing, assembly, usability, and serviceability challenges, all on a tight timeline. PI’s extensive experience in large equipment was critical in helping to bring the Desktop Metal P-50 to life.
PI’s engineering team worked closely with Desktop Metal to develop an external enclosure design for the P-50 that met with the company’s exacting standards, aesthetic vision and production schedule. Additionally, PI aided Desktop Metal’s team in procurement, assembly, and delivery of prototype and short-run production parts for the system, helping to provide a level of consistency from intent to execution that is especially critical for startups.
