Product Insight and Dental Photonics are proud to announce the Alta® Modular Laser System (MLS) has been granted a coveted iF product design award for 2013.

The Alta® MLS allows for the integration of targeted dental lasers for a wide range of treatment modalities utilizing one compact modular device. It is comprised of a central console with a power supply, microcomputer, touchscreen display, and modules that clip on to the side of the unit. The system is lightweight and portable and can be placed on a table top or mounted on a wall for ultimate flexibility in a dental surgery setting. A 7” interactive touch screen allows for easy procedure settings and viewing from multiple angles and distances. Multiple application modules designed for diverse uses such as soft tissue treatment and minimally invasive hard tissue preparation eliminates technological obsolescence by allowing the dental practitioner to interchange various modules with one base unit.

Product Insight (PI) worked closely with Dental Photonics from the early stages of the program to ensure the Alta® MLS provided the ultimate in usability and versatility. “We were very committed to ensuring that our design supported the client’s goal of simplicity and ease-of-use” said Jim Varney, Director of Design for PI. “Although the Alta® MLS technology is very complex it needed to be versatile, compact and portable with a clean, pure form language to emphasize the device’s simplicity and ease-of-use”. A modular spool with handpiece support was designed to be interchangeable to suit the surgeon’s needs. A soft TPE material was chosen to protect and manage the delicate optical fiber and expose only what is needed in a surgical setting. The lightweight design easily and quickly attaches to a table or wall for optimal use in multiple environments. The display angle was carefully considered for optimal viewing in both configurations. The display surface is purposefully dominant to reduce visual clutter and allow focus on the touchscreen interface.

Established in 1953, the iF product design award is among the most important awards for innovative product design. Internationally renowned jury members from the areas of design, business, industry, and education evaluated 3,011 entries in the 2013 competition, utilizing 11 criteria including design quality, degree of innovation, ergonomics and functionality. Winning entries will be featured in the 2013 iF Yearbook as well as in the iF Design Exhibitions in Hannover and Hamburg, Germany.
