Product Insight and Tarpon Biosystems are proud to announce the BioSMB™ System has been named Silver Winner in the Sustainable Living/Environmental Preservation category of the International Design Awards competition.

BioSMB™ is a multi-column technology that provides greater flexibility, reduced costs, and high efficiency in biopharmaceutical production. Incorporating a disposable manifold that is practical and functional within virtually all bio-processing environments eliminates the need for expending energy intensive “clean steam” to sanitize fixed stainless steel tubing (the current industry standard). The BioSMB™ also enables bio-manufacturers to purify a drug product (injectable dosage form) while consuming up to 80% less of consumable materials, one-half the water, less energy, and one-third the physical space, thereby providing a “greener” solution.

Product Insight (PI) worked closely with Tarpon from the early stages of the program to help bring their vision to reality. “We were all impressed with the technology and their commitment to efficiency, something we feel strongly about” said Jim Varney, Director of Design for PI. “One of the core challenges of this program was how to make a complex system easy to use and intuitive. We were able to leverage our experience in related equipment, combined with an understanding of human factors, to develop a system architecture that makes sense from the user’s point of view while simultaneously optimizing performance and space usage”. The flow of inputs through the system is organized from left to right, which makes set-up sequential and places all user access points in the same easy-to-reach ergonomic zone. The “arch” features on either side of the device keep the pathways organized and help protect fluid lines. Access to key components is achieved through design of a removable rack that folds up into the unit. These design elements provide for a positive end user experience while utilizing minimal laboratory space.

The International Design Awards exist to celebrate the world’s most visionary designers, discover new and emerging talent, and promote the appreciation of design worldwide. Designers submitted entries from over 65 countries throughout the world, proving IDA’s global emphasis. Judging by a distinguished panel of professionals was a rigorous process, with the critically acclaimed work of the winners published in the International Design Awards Book of Designs along with year-long coverage on the International Design Awards website. Winning entries will also be recognized at the International Design Awards (IDA) event in Los Angeles.
